Check the shank before choosing a drill bit
The shank is the end held by your tool. Match it to the tool holder before comparing cutting sizes.
Start with your tool's manual.
Check the holder type and its supported size range. A cylindrical or hex shank and an SDS-plus shank use different holding arrangements. Do not assume a bit will fit because its cutting diameter looks right.
Then check three details.
- Shank type and size. These must match the tool holder and the manufacturer's instructions.
- Cutting diameter and working length. These describe the hole size and usable drilling reach. Total bit length is a separate measurement.
- Intended material. Choose a bit specified for the material you are drilling.
If an adapter is needed, follow the tool and adapter instructions, including the allowed operating mode. Compatibility is specific to the combination.
